The capital of the erstwhile Alwar state founded in 1771 AD, is well-known for its palaces museums and the nearby, wildlife sanctuaries. At 150 kms from Jaipur and 170 kms from Delhi, Alwar is nestled among small Aravalli Hills.

Located amidst the hiils is the most prominent fort of Alwar that tells stories of the past. Formerly a Rajput state, Alwar was close to imperial Delhi. People in the state did not accept outside interference and resisted foreign invasions harshly. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the state of Alwar formed a group and raided Delhi. But finally the Sultan Balban (1277 AD-1287 AD) surmounted them, bringing the area under Muslim rule.

In 1771 AD Maharaja Pratap Singh, belonging to Kuchhwaha Rajput of the clan of the rulers of Jaipur, got Alwar back and founded a principality. Apart from its long history, the city possesses a rich and natural heritage with some beautiful lakes and picturesque valleys.

Some of the best varieties of birds and animals can be found here. Alwar owns one of the most beautiful wildlife sanctuaries in Rajasthan-Sariska which is a perfect land for tigers.
