Almora has very interesting regarding origin of its name. Kilmora, a plant to be utilized in cleaning religious utensils of the sun temple Katarmal, gave birth to name Almora. The people who used to bring Kilmora plant were called Kilmori or Almori. Almora, a prominent tourist destination in Uttarakhand, is worth visiting a place. It is also known as the "Switzerland of India" because of its exceptional natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, delicate handicrafts, appetizing cuisine and exotic fauna. Almora, the cultural capital of Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, finds mention in Epic Mahabharat as a developed human settlement. The kingdom of Almora was established in 1568 AD by King Kalyan Chand.
