Shahpura used to be the state capital of formerly Shahpura state in the princely days. The rulers belonged to the Sisodia family of Rajputs of Mewar (Udaipur). The city was founded when Sujan Singh (the grand-son of Amar Singh I who reigned from 1597-1620), took it over in 1629.

The town is surrounded by a Shahpura Wall with four doors. Ram Dwara built by Ram Snehi Sampradaya (the Trust) is the nicest structure in town. Ram Snehi is a sect founded among Hindus in 1748 AD and the archpriest of the temple is responsible for the sect. The pilgrims come to visit from all over the country and even from places like Myanmar (Burma). An annual fair called Phool Dol ka Mela is held here in April-March for five days.

The temple is built in the style of the cenotaph (the domed pavilion) which is quite a common sight in Rajasthan. But Ram Dwara in Shahpura has the most beautiful pillars and domes. The domes in the main group are painted, while elsewhere they show detailed size.

The Trimurti Smarak is the memorial of three freedom fighters, Jorawar Singh, Keshari Singh and Pratap Singh. It shows the busts of men with inscriptions below. A smaller destination is the Keshari haveli, named after one of the three martyrs commemorated in the Trimurti Smarak. It is called Keshri Singh Barhath Haveli and is a nice building, but needs renovation from time to time. A notice board outside the house says it is under the Archaeological Study of India.

Shahpura is also famous of the Pabuji ki Phad, a long sheet of cloth showing paintings depicting the acts of heroism of Pabuji, a celebrity of the Marwar (Jodhpur). These phads are painted in large numbers by local artists and exported to various places.
