Maheshwar is a town known for ancient temples located on the bank of Narmada River in the Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh. It is believed that Lord Shiva loves the flow of River Narmada here because it is the only inner peace idol to quiet it. It has mythological and historical importance as it is believed that King Sahastrarjun who was a husband of 500 women had arrested the Narmada River with its 1000 arms and had made a play area for his wives. During this period, the Shivalinga was made by Ravana on the shore. When he pulled out the river water, the Shivlinga was washed away and this ensued in the war between them. But when the king got the victory, he kept ten lamps on Ravana's heads and one on his hand. Now you can see that 11 lamps in the Sahastrarjun Temple keep the event alive.
