On the shores of Lake Vembanad, among the palm fringes and rice fields is the most popular destination of Kerala-Kumarakom. Granted with impressive backwaters, shimmering lake and ancient holy places, Kumarakom is an ideal destination for those seeking a relaxed vacation.

It is believed that Kumarakom bore the name of Lord Kumaran, an adored deity in the temples of the region. Earlier the area was under the domination of the Vadakkancore kingdom, which lost its political backbone for the rulers of Travancore in 1750 AD. According to legends, a British monarch George Baker discovered Kumarakom in 1876 AD. He was so impressed with its beautiful landscape, quiet water bodies and mangrove trees that it decided to settle there and transformed the fertile land into paddy and coconut farm. Hence, Kumarakom was born. George Baker made his home in Kumarakom and today this bungalow is a five star resort in this idyllic destination.

Kumarakom is best known for its backwaters cruise offering a panoramic view of green environment. The emerald green lagoons of Kerala are marked by rich vegetation, rice paddies, long lazy boats and miles of solitude and peace. Kumarakom has a strong network of backwaters which are ideally suited to travel by ferries and furnished barges. All the barges arranged to float over the lagoons are decorated to a luxurious perfection, thus seducing tourists in great numbers. Furnished with very large beds, paneled with rich teak flooring, polished and filled with natural light, houseboats are supremely comfortable.

The canoe ride to Kumarakom will take tourists to the spectacular place of avian - Kumarakom Bird sanctuary. Extending over an area of five hectares, the Kumarakom Bird Reserve is the hot spot for seeing famous domestic and migratory birds. Here one can succeed in discovering the species like larks, herons, cuckoos, owls, the Siberian crane and a flycatcher. Otherwise, explore the natural environment at a quieter pace by taking a short walk through the scenic forests.
