This enormous area of land includes evergreen forests, semi-evergreen forests, sweet deciduous mountain pastures and Shoal forests, which house a diverse range of fauna and flora. Also, there are artificial vegetation such as teak plantations and the freshwater ecosystem, created by the construction of three dams to enrich the area with sufficient water supply. This region has the distinction of being the very first scientifically managed teak plantation in the world.
The animals found here consist of Lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Tahr, Elephant, Tiger, Panther, Wild Boar, Sambar, Hat Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Lazarus Bear as well as Nilgiri Small Morer Travancore 'Flying Squirrel and Gaur. Trees like Teak, Neem, Sandalwood, contribute to the flora of the landscape.
The birds found here are the Gray-headed Fishing Eagle, the Peninsular Bay Owl, the Ramil Nilgiri, the Black-headed Kingfisher, the Great Black Peak and the Lesser Gray-Headed Fish Eagle. The Mahseer species of endangered fish is also found in this region.
