Oldest temple in Kanchipuram

Among more than hundred temples in Kanchipuram, Sri Kailasanath Temple is the ancient-most one. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Sri Kailasanatha Temple holds immense reverence among the devotees. Construction of Sri Kailasanatha temple began by Rajasimha in the 7th century AD and was completed by his son Mahendravarman III. Sri Kailasanath Temple incorporates all the traits native to the Pallava style — the pyramidal tower, a pillared hall and the vestibule, all enclosed by a wall surmounted by a parapet of cupolas. A very interesting aspect in temple architecture can be noted in Pallava king Rajsimha’s reign – white sandstone replaced the profuse use of granite. It was due to twin reasons- first, granite quarrying was probably very taxing; and second, highly specialized craft knowledge required to control size & design while employing granite. The result was that while sandstone was freely used for the entire temple owing to its easily tractable nature, granite in small thin slabs and blocks was invariably introduced in Shiv Lingam and interior pedestals like ‘pattika’ in order to reinforce the superincumbent load. The walls of the temple are finely carved, engraved and painted with the images of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in different postures. Home to 60 shrines, Kailasanatha Temple’s walls facing circumambulatory pathway are embellished with meticulously and intricately carved sculptures. Mahashivaratri is observed here as celebration. The temple is visited by thousands of devotees.
