Guntur city, located 60 km from the Bay of Bengal and 260 km from Hyderabad, is a prominent city in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh is on. Located on the banks of Krishna river, Guntur has 100 km long coastline.

In ancient times Guntur had been called Garthapuri in Sanskrit literature. It is a historical land. Palaeolithic (old stone age) tools of stones, used then by the Homo Sapiens, have been excavated from Guntur and, thus, this historical city as the place having the second oldest evidence of human habitation in India. Historical records indicate that Gautam Buddha carried out Kalchakra ceremony and preached the faithful at Dharanikota/Dhanyakatakam near Guntur. It clearly proves that Guntur has been since the times of Gautam Buddha at the forefront of culture, education and civilization.

The ancient history of Guntur can be traced back to 5th century BC when the Sala dynasty ruled here. During the reign of Ammaraja I of Vengi Chalukyan dynasty (922-929 CE), the earliest reference of Guntur has been found. The contemporary inscriptions of the area from 1147 CE- 1158 CE find mention of Guntur.

The modern history of Guntur commences from the advent of the Europeans in this area. It has led to a new era. It opened a new chapter of national and international importance for Guntur city. The city has been under control of the Mughal, the French & the British over the time.

Guntur region can be considered as a major tourist attraction. Kondavidu Castle , Undavalli Caves, Amravati , Uppalapadu Gardens, Prakasam Barrage etc are some of the major tourist attractions in Guntur.

Like other cities in the state in Guntur is also a tropical climate. The area is characterized by intense sunny days in the summer, mild winter and heavy rainfall.
