On the west coast, Dwarka is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism. Its temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna (Dwarkadheesh) and was built in one night by the grandson of Lord Krishna. This pilgrimage site receives every year a large crowd of faithful who gather here celebrate the birth of Krishna- Krishna Janmashtami. Further south lies the pretty harbor town of Porbandar where Mahatma Gandhi was born. In the southeast, Palitana is another very popular pilgrimage site. The site is home to 863 Jain temples built on a plateau culminating at 600 m altitude. To reach all the temples, you have to climb the 3950 steps of a stone staircase. On the south, the peninsula of Diu, a former Portuguese colony and assimilated in India in 1961, is located. This little paradise Of 40 sq km contains long sandy beaches, but also a beautiful Portuguese architectural heritage. As far as nature is concerned, the Gir Forest National Park is a unique reserve in the world that’s the sanctuary of the last lions of Asia that were believed to have disappeared in the 20th century. Gujarat is home to sites of Harappan Civilization, ancient temples, vivid wildlife, panoramic beaches etc.
