About 153 km from Indore, these man-made caves on the Bagh river dug between the 5th and 7th centuries out of a perpendicular rock face on the slope of the Vindhya range have beautiful mural paintings to offer. Originally there were nine caves of which five have survived, the most magnificent is Cave No-4, Rang Mahal, though Cave No. 2, the Gossain's Cave looks in good shape. Once, Buddhist hermits resided here. With the decline of Buddhism, the caves became the haunt of vagrants. Smoke from the fires made inside the caves considerably damaged the murals. A recent flood has nearly destroyed the remaining paintings.
