Historical town of Chanderi is located about 34 km away from Latitpur railway station of the Centeral Railways and about 50 km away from Ashok Nagar of Guna district. From the view point of tourism, this is an important town. The Chedi dynasty King Shishupal of Mahabharat had founded this city and, probably, owing to this, the name of Chanderi is derived. Jain temples, having beautiful and historical idols of twenty four Jain Tirthankars, are one of the major tourist attractions. Mehamud Ghajnavi had attacked Chanderi. After him the army general of Nasiruddin Khilzi-Amilmul Ferozshah Tughlak and Shikander also attacked it. Babar also attacked on the king of Chanderi, King Medni Rai. This town is 1700 feet higher than sea level. Rivers Betwa and Urvashi flow here. The sarees and jardozi work of Chanderi are world renowned. For staying here, guest houses and hotels are available.

With a long history, the town of Chanderi was ruled by many leaders, before it was transferred to Sindhias of Gwalior in 1861 by Hugh Rose (1858-1861). The story of Chanderi began when Ghyasuddin Balban captured the city in 1251 for Nasir ud Mahmud, the Sultan of Delhi. A few years later Rana Sanga of Chittor established his capital at Chanderi and gave it to Medini Rai, the Wazir (the Arabian minister term) of Mandu, after long ruled by Khilijis and Tugluk of Mamluk. Years later Rajput of Bundela won the city in 1586 AD and then came the time when Devi Singh was made a governor of the city.

Chanderi is a historically significant city from the time of the Sultans of Malwa and Bundela Rajputs, who ruled the region in 15th and 16th century. Surrounded by exotic hills, lakes and forest, this attractive destination is incredibly famous of Chanderi saris and historical monuments that draw a lot of tourists to this place each year. The city is full of historical landmarks, dating from the 11th century to the 18th century and witnessed tumultuous ups and downs. All three religions, Jain, Hindu and Islam have flourished in the city. Chanderi is extremely popular among historians and traders, involved in the handicraft industry of hand loom in the manufacture of sarees, salwar costumes and other dress material.
