Baroli Temples

The 8th century temples in Baroli are fine examples of ancient architecture. The temples are located 15 minutes from Bhainsrorgarh. It is known that they are one of the oldest temple complexes of Rajasthan. The temples in Baroli, built of intricately carved stones, are true representative of architectural style of Gurjar –Pratihar Empire. Presently protected and looked after by Archaeological Survey of India, Baroli Temples were in news in 1998 as a graciously carved statue of Lord Shiva’s Nataraja form was stolen from here and, later, has been traced to a private collector in London.

There are several temples with different presiding deities. The Ghateshwara Mahadev Temple is the largest and prominent one. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is depicted here in the form of five ‘lingas’. One of the ‘lingas’ is craved as inverted ‘ghanta’ or pot and, hence, the name of the temple. Other famous temples of the Baroli Temples comples are are Ganesha Temple, Vamanavatar Temple, Shiva Temple, Trimurti (Triple-headed Shiva) Temple, Ashtamata Temple, Sheshashyan Temple.
