Ajmer Sharif

Ajmer Sharif is also known as Dargah Ajmer, Dargah Sharif, Gharib Nawaz and Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chisti's Dargah. This is the mausoleum of Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chisti, a highly revered Muslim saint who, coming with an invader, settled down at Ajmer in 1190 and died in 1236, at the age of 96. Hindus too show great respect to his memory. In 1464 Sultan Muhammad Khilji of Mandu built a mosque here. Later, Akbar built Akbari Mosque and the 23-metre high Buland Darwaja Gate. Jahangir and Shah Jahan too added to the buildings. Emperor Akbar made regular pilgrimages here.

Dargah Sharif or Ajmer Sharif is the tomb of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, a sufi saint who came to Ajmer from Persia in 1192. Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chishti holds a prominent place among the spiritual Muslim lealers in the world. Constructed with white marble, it has 11 arches and a Persian inscription running over the total construction. It has a marble dome and the actual tomb is inside, surrounded by a silver dock. The tomb attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year on the anniversary of the saint's death.

People of every religion, caste & creed come here and offer traditional "chadar" to seek the blessings of this Sufi saint. Nothing can beat the "qawwali" in Khwaja Garib Nawaz Dargah who has a magical power that rarely leaves any member of the public intact. Because of its charitable activity, the holy place is generally known as Gharib Nawaz, the benefactor of the poor.
