The Sun Temple at Amber is probably the oldest and mature example of temple architecture flourished in Jaipur. This earliest era Sun temple is most visited by the divotees, history buffs and archaeologists. Therefore, it mostly does not figure out on Jaipur’s travel map. The religious architecture of the Jaipur region takes a definite shape from the 10th century A.D. To this period belongs the renovated Sun temple at Amber, which is the earliest religious monument at Amber. This is a temple with Shikhara but it was completely plastered at some stage covering under its plaster its intricate carvings in stone. This temple is situated on the slope of the hill at the back of the town of Amber. The stone pillars of the mandapa and the ceilings however, retain their originality and one of the pillars in the front now bears a two armed figure of Ganapati with Khatvanga in the right hand and an uncertain object in the left. Above and below this figure is a short epigraph of 7 lines mentioning Friday the 11th day of fortnight of the month of Magh of Vikram Samvat 1011 (Indian calender).
