Chittoor

Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh is most famous now- a- days for Tirupati Balaji Temple but it has been a treasure trove of various tools giving ample proofs of development of human civilization from prehistoric times. Archaeologists have discovered various tools and proofs of pre-historic ages ranging from Palaeolithic period (Tirupathi, Sitarampeta, Ellampalle, Mekalavandlapalle, Piler, etc.) to Mesolithic times (Chinthaparthi, Moratavandlapalle, Aruvandlapalle, Tirupathi etc.) to Neolithic and ancient periods (Bangarupalem). The existence of megolithic culture was revealed by the discovery of burials at Irulabanda, Bapanatham, Voyalpadu, Sodum, Velkuru, Nyakaneri, Basinikonda, etc.

Located on the banks of Punnai river, Chittor district’s political history dates back to the Mauryas in the 4th century BC. Several dynasties like Mauryas, Satvahanas, Chalukyas of Badami, Rashtrakutas ruled this area. It is bounded on the east by Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh and Trivuvallur and Vellore Districts of Tamil Nadu, on the west by Kolar and Chikkaballapur Districts of Karnataka, on the North Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh and on the south by Dharmapuri District of Tamil Nadu.
