Varah Temple

While a huge symbol is woshipped in the Matangeswara Temple, the Varaha Temple facing it has a 2.6 metre high image of Varaha—the Boar—Incarnation of Vishnu in the process of rescuing Bhudevi----the Earth. The image is surrounded by smaller images of gods and goddesses. It is actually a small shrine dedicated to one of the many avatars of Vishnu, the boar. Raised on a platform, it rests on 14 pillars and dates from about 900 AD, making it one of the oldest monuments of Khajuraho. This temple is located on a terrace platform.

Varah Temple is located opposite Lakshamana Temple in Khajuraho. It is constructed on a high pedestal and the pedestal is encircled by 674 idols of gods, godesses and other motifs from Hindu mythology. Even the idol of Yajna Varah is beatified with beautif carvings, including Goddess Saraswati with Veena in hands on the snout. The roof is decorated with finely ethed lotus flower with exquisite detailing.
