The largest city in Madhya Pradesh, Indore (population 827,071) by the rivers Saraswati and Khan, was first made the headquarters of a territory by Mahar Rao Holkar. He received it from the Maratha rulers for whom he fought.

Indore became prosperous during the reign of Rani Ahilya Bai, the widow of Malhar Rao's son, Khande Rao. Ahilya Bai proved a great administrator and her memory is inseparable from the city. The modern Indore is a busy trading centre.
